This antique Queen Victoria jubilee medal dates to 1897 and commemorates the monarch’s Diamond Jubilee. The die-stamped gilt-metal souvenir presents a veiled portrait of Queen Victoria within the legend “THE LONGEST REIGN IN ENGLISH HISTORY 1837–1897”, surrounded by a bold cross-shaped design. Its surviving aged textile ribbon gives the piece added display character, although the original upper fastening is no longer present.

Queen Victoria jubilee medal from 1897

The four arms are inscribed AUSTRALIA, INDIA, CANADA and SOUTH AFRICA, reflecting the imperial imagery used on late-Victorian commemorative souvenirs. Made for public celebration rather than as an official military award, this antique Queen Victoria medal would have been worn, suspended or kept as a small royal memento during the jubilee period.

The central portrait and surrounding wording remain clearly legible. Measuring approximately 46 mm high for the metal body, it is a compact 1897 Diamond Jubilee medal suited to a collection of royal memorabilia, historical medals or Victorian commemoratives.

Design, construction and condition

The medal is formed from thin pressed gilt metal, most likely brass or a similar base-metal alloy. The reverse shows a mirrored negative impression of the front design. This is a normal feature of one-sided pressed construction and is not a separate engraved reverse. No precious-metal hallmark or maker’s mark has been identified, so the material should not be described as gold.

The attached ribbon appears consistent with the aged patriotic ribbons found on comparable examples. It is now heavily faded and frayed, with loose threads, worn edges and only traces of its former colour. The metal displays rubbing, small areas of gilding loss, tarnish and age-related surface marks, while retaining an aged gilt-brass appearance with clear relief detail. The suspension ring remains attached; the original pin or upper mounting is absent.

Historical display appeal

Its combination of portrait, dated jubilee legend and named territories makes this Victorian commemorative medal immediately recognisable as a late-19th-century royal souvenir. The surviving ribbon adds period character, while its worn state also reflects the object’s age and previous use.

This type of British Empire jubilee badge works well as a small cabinet display, framed historical accent or focused addition to a collection of royal memorabilia, Victorian commemoratives or historical medals.
