This Maling Peony Rose jug is an attractive example of mid-century English decorative pottery, finished in a rich dark blue lustre glaze with a colourful floral band and gilt edging. Its angular body, shaped pouring lip and sweeping handle give the piece a particularly distinctive silhouette.

The underside carries the printed Maling castle backstamp with “Estd 1762”, “Newcastle-on-Tyne” and “England”, together with the hand-painted pattern number 6563. The recognised Maling pattern records identify number 6563 as Peony Rose in the dark blue waved colourway and place it within the approximately 1950–1955 production period. The date 1762 on the mark refers to the foundation of the pottery rather than the manufacture date of this individual piece.

Maling Peony Rose jug in dark blue lustre

This Maling lustreware jug combines an iridescent blue waved or scale-like ground with a cream-coloured decorative band filled with pink, red, yellow and blue flowers. Black linear borders, gilt highlights and the reflective glaze add definition to the design, while the decoration continues around the body and inside the shaped rim.

The faceted lower body rests on a hexagonal foot and rises into a flared neck with an asymmetric pouring lip. A large curved handle completes the sculptural form. Measuring approximately 20 cm tall, this vintage blue jug has enough presence for a shelf, cabinet, mantelpiece or traditional decorative pottery collection.

Condition and decorative use

The jug is offered in vintage pre-owned condition. No cracks have been reported. The photographs show age-related rubbing to parts of the gilt rim, together with small surface marks and natural variation in the lustre glaze. These details are consistent with the age and decorative finish of the piece.

The interior and underside have both been photographed, including the factory backstamp and pattern number. Watertightness has not been independently tested, so the piece is recommended primarily for decorative display or for holding dried flowers rather than fresh flowers and water.
