Vintage Minoan Style Pottery Jug – Hand Painted Fish Design, 19 cm

£29.99

Vintage Minoan style pottery jug featuring colourful hand-painted fish and aquatic decoration. Approximately 19 cm tall, with a distinctive flared rim, curved handle and an underside inscription appearing to identify the design as a copy of a Crete 1600 B.C. piece.

This is a later decorative reproduction rather than an ancient artefact. The jug displays an intentionally aged and distressed surface finish together with a significant chip/loss to the upper rim, clearly shown in the photographs.

Vintage Minoan Style Pottery Jug with colourful hand-painted fish decoration, a dramatic flared rim and a distinctive curved handle. Measuring approximately 19 cm in height, this unusual decorative pottery piece appears to have been produced as a later reproduction or interpretation of ancient Cretan pottery rather than as an archaeological object.

The jug has a warm cream, ochre and earthy-toned surface decorated with a group of stylised blue and turquoise fish. Orange, green, brown and dark painted details appear throughout the design, creating an intentionally aged Mediterranean appearance. The combination of marine imagery and the vessel’s unusual form gives the piece a strong Minoan and Aegean-inspired character.

Vintage Minoan Style Pottery Jug with Fish Decoration

The body has a rounded lower section that narrows towards the neck before opening into a broad flared rim. A substantial curved handle extends from the body towards the upper rim, where it is accompanied by an unusual circular projection or thumb-rest style feature.

The main decoration consists of several stylised fish painted in shades of turquoise and blue with orange and dark accents. Additional loosely painted aquatic, plant-like and abstract details continue around the body. The finish has a heavily weathered and distressed appearance, with variations in colour and texture across the surface contributing to its aged character.

Crete 1600 B.C. Reproduction Inscription

A handwritten inscription is present on the underside of the jug. Although the writing is worn and not completely clear, it appears to read along the lines of “Copy of / Crete / 1600 B.C.”.

The 1600 B.C. reference is understood to relate to the ancient design or vessel being reproduced and does not represent the manufacturing date of this particular jug. The piece is therefore being offered as a later Minoan or Cretan-style decorative reproduction and not as an ancient artefact.

Condition and Visible Rim Damage

This is a pre-owned decorative pottery item showing considerable surface character, including rubbing, fading, colour variation and a deliberately weathered or antiqued appearance.

Please note that there is a significant chip or loss to one section of the upper rim. The damaged area exposes the reddish ceramic body underneath and is clearly documented in the supplied close-up photograph.

No major break to the body or handle is apparent from the supplied photographs. The underside also displays surface wear together with the handwritten identifying inscription.

Please study all photographs carefully as they form an important part of the condition description.

Decorative and Collectable Appeal

At approximately 19 cm high, this Vintage Minoan Style Pottery Jug is large enough to make an attractive display piece while remaining suitable for a shelf, cabinet, sideboard or pottery collection.

Its unusual marine decoration may particularly appeal to collectors of Mediterranean pottery, Greek and Cretan-inspired decorative objects, archaeological reproductions, vintage ceramics and fish-themed pottery.

The combination of the sculptural form, hand-painted marine imagery, distressed surface and reproduction inscription gives the jug considerably more character than a conventional decorative vessel.
